iPhone on June 20th? Sure, whatever

Last Thursday, CNBC reported a launch date for the iPhone of June 20. This sent Apple stock upwards on Friday, but now our sister blog BloggingStocks points out that there's basically no hard information on the exact launch date, and that the CNBC report was apparently based on the word of a single AT&T phone store employee. The AP did a little legwork, contacting several AT&T stores in New York and getting all kinds of dates from June 11 to 22. Official spokesmen from Apple and AT&T declined to give anything more specific than what we've known all along-"late June." Even the slightly-more-high-end approach of calling headquarters hasn't locked down the date.

So what to make of all this? Well, BloggingStocks is surely right to conclude that AT&T store clerks probably know next to nothing about the actual timetable. Further, there's something kind of crazy about the frenzy that one random AT&T store employee can cause with what was little more than speculation. We'll see the iPhone when we see it, and we'll know more at WWDC. We can hope that Apple does a little better than with the Apple TV release.

Aye. Getting the day off work for sure. And unless it falls on the 29th (which I can't miss) then it looks like Apple is forcing me to play the "sick" card whatever day they do finally announce.

I hope you're happy, Apple. :) Making me fake an illness for you. Shame. :P

"...why does the date really matter."

Because I need to get this day off work - to wait in line if necessary, and/or to set the thing up and play with it. I've only been waiting for three years!

I truly believe it will be after the 15th, like many people. I think maybe the 19/26th (Tuesdays), moreso the 26th. It gives insanely excited people like me the weekend to line-up and make plans (without missing weekday stuff). The weekend media gets the beginning of the fun, and the forming lines. Then on monday the weekday media can build on what the weekend media already did. Then on tuesday morning it is released when the Apple/AT&T stores open. This gives the weekend, weekday and the tuesday morning media a chance to capture all the insanity. Tues-Thursday are then priming days for the next wave. Finally, you have the end of the week, (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) for Part II of the insanity.

I vote for June 20. It's my birthday so maybe they'll give me a free one.

I *know* the rumor about a prepaid iPhone is not going to appear. This is a major, major bummer to me since I live in Japan and am only in the U.S. for a few weeks at a time -- I'd kill for a non-money-wasting, non-contract option but alas, America allows its cell phone providors to really stick it to them.

I went to the Cingular store yesterday and the guy on duty told me point black "6/15 is the date that the iPhone will be released". He didn't hesitate, didn't blink funny, and repeated it 2 more times.

So 6/15 it is, unless 6/16 gets here and it wasn't released "yesterday".

Let's use a bit of logic here (yes, I know... using logic on a rumor is like [insert pithy comparison here]).

a. Apple is not going to want to take away from Leopard and WWDC and risk further angering/depressing Mac developers, who are already feeling a bit ignored. There is enough in Leopard to fill the keynote without needing to add a consumer-level product release to a professional-level conference.

b. Apple is going to want nothing to disturb the iPhone launch -- this is, after all, the product that Apple feels will change it's future.

c. To make the biggest splash, you want the product to be seen by as many people as possible, as soon as possible. That means a morning announcement so that the announcement appears on evening newscasts across the country, and a weekend (or near-weekend) release with heavy media coverage. Media people need time to plan for coverage and fans need time to queue up, so an announcement a day or so before the release is common.

d. Weekend releases often occur on Fridays. Midnight releases are common for heavily hyped products, although that can backfire if there's not enough time people to make plans or people don't want to stay up that late.

e. "Late June" means the last 15 days of June — 16–30 June. 16–17 June is a weekend and a bit late to make an announcement if the iPhone will be released that weekend. 19 June is a Tuesday and Apple's common product announcement day. 21 June is the first day of Summer in the northern hemisphere.

f. Putting a, b, c, d and e together, we get possible product release announcement dates of 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, or 28 June. Here are my analyses (all assume a Friday midnight/store-opening release):

19/26 June — Tuesdays, the only thing really going for these days is that it's Apple's usual product announcement day; chances low

20/27 June — Wednesdays, these days would give give media plenty of time to plan coverage and fans time to make plans; chances high

21/28 June — Thursdays, these days have the same benefits as 20/27 June with a bit less lead time, plus 21 June is the first day of Summer; chances high

My prediction? 20 or 21 June as Apple is likely going to want to capture some iPhone revenue for fiscal June.
